Why SMO 254™?

High-alloy austenitic stainless steel developed for use in seawater and other aggressive chloride-bearing media

High corrosion resistance

Stainless steel grade 254 SMO™ is a very high end austenitic stainless steel. It is designed with a combination of impact toughness resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, and pitting and crevice corrosion with strength that is twice that of the stainless steel 300 series.

  • Best in Saltwater and Marine applications
  • Process Equipments in chemical factories
  • Use in oil distillation columns
  • Can be used in food processing units
  • Best for Desalination processing unit
  • Bleaching equipments in pulp and paper industry

Higher Strength

It demonstrates outstanding resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion stress cracking, and corrosion fatigue uniform corrosion. 254 SMO grade is considered a very high end austenitic stainless steel; mainly comprised of between 19.5% and 20.5% chromium, 17.5% to 18.5% nickel, 6% to 6.5% molybdenum and .18% to .22% nitrogen. These specific levels of Cr, Ni, Mo, and N in this “super austenitic” chemical makeup allow 31254 to combine impact toughness resistance to corrosion cracking, with pitting and crevice corrosion resistance. The result is strength of nearly twice that of 300 series stainless steels. It is also characterized by high ductility and impact strength. With high levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, Alloy 254 SMO is frequently used in high chloride environments, such as brackish water, seawater, pulp mill bleach plants, and other chloride process streams. UNS S31254 is often referred to as a “6% Moly” grade due to the molybdenum content; the 6% Moly family has the ability to withstand high temperatures and maintain strength under volatile conditions. In some applications it has even been found to be a more cost effective substitute for high nickel and titanium alloys.

Good Weldability

254 SMO® is a stainless steel was initially created to utilize in seawater and other aggressive chloride-bearing situations. This grade includes a very high end austenitic stainless steel; mainly comprised within 17.5% to 18.5% nickel, 19.5% and 20.5% chromium, 6% to 6.5% molybdenum and .18% to .22% nitrogen. These particular levels of Cr, Ni, Mo, and N in this “super austenitic” chemical makeup allow 31254 to join impact toughness resistance to corrosion cracking, with pitting and crevice corrosion resistance. The result is strength of almost double that of 300 series stainless steels.
